چکیده مقاله:

Background Pulmonary involvement is the main cause of mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). Airway clearance techniques are non-pharmacological complement options for CF patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term outcome of airway cleaning treatment in patients with cystic fibrosis in a children's hospital. Materials and Methods This clinical trial study conducted on 40 CF patients referring to the specialized lung clinic of Tabriz Pediatric Center in Tabriz, Iran from April 2016 to April 2017. Patients were randomly divided into two equal case (PEP), and control (conventional) groups. The basic spirometry parameters were measured on the European Respiratory Society criteria. After therapeutic intervention, the patients were followed for the next six months and the number of hospital admissions were recorded. Results The mean of FEV1, FEV1/FVC and FEF25%-75% in the control group after treatment were 62.60±20.39, 86.70±19.39 and 55.20±32.78, respectively. Comparison of the control group means of FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and FEF25%-75% in the case group after intervention (57.52±14.62, 76.80±21.83 and 59.8±28.71, respectively) showed significant differences (p

Immediate changes in blood-gas tensions during chest physiotherapy with positive expiratory pressure and oscillating positive expiratory pressure in patients with cystic fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE To assess and compare immediate effects of chest physiotherapy with positive expiratory pressure (PEP) versus oscillating PEP on transcutaneously measured blood-gas tensions in patients with cystic fibrosis. METHODS Fifteen patients (mean age 12.5 y, range 6.9-21.5 y) participated. The treatments were randomized and performed on 2 separate occasions, 8 weeks apart. Spirometry was co...

Cystic fibrosis: physical exercise versus chest physiotherapy.

Twelve children with cystic fibrosis were admitted to a paediatric rehabilitation hospital for 17 days to take part in a training programme of vigorous physical exercise and sport. The daily inhalation-physiotherapy routine was stopped. Ventilatory status was assessed by spirometry and measurement of lung volumes one day before admission, one day after the end of the hospital stay, and 8 weeks ...

Positive expiratory pressure physiotherapy for airway clearance in people with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND Chest physiotherapy is widely prescribed to assist the clearance of airway secretions in people with cystic fibrosis. Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices provide back pressure to the airways during expiration. This may improve clearance by building up gas behind mucus via collateral ventilation and by temporarily increasing functional residual capacity. Given the widespread us...

Evaluation of positive expiratory pressure as an adjunct to chest physiotherapy in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.

It has been suggested that positive expiratory pressure may assist the clearance of bronchial secretions in the treatment of cystic fibrosis. It has been compared with currently used postural drainage techniques. Three treatment regimens were compared in 18 patients with cystic fibrosis. Treatment A consisted of breathing exercises emphasising inspiration, interspersed with the forced expiratio...

The effects of postural drainage and positive expiratory pressure physiotherapy on tracheobronchial clearance in cystic fibrosis.

We studied the effects of two chest physiotherapy regimens on whole lung and regional tracheobronchial clearance (TBC) in ten patients with cystic fibrosis. The regimens were given on two separate days and consisted of 20 min of (1) postural drainage and the forced expiration technique (PD + FET), and (2) positive expiratory pressure (PEP-mask) and FET (PEP + FET). A third day served as control...

CYSTIC FIBROSIS Non-invasive ventilation assists chest physiotherapy in adults with acute exacerbations of cystic fibrosis

Background: Chest physiotherapy is essential to the management of cystic fibrosis (CF). However, respiratory muscle fatigue and oxygen desaturation during treatment have been reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether non-invasive ventilation (NIV) during chest physiotherapy could prevent these adverse effects in adults with exacerbations of CF. Methods: Twenty six patients of mea...
